Support Our Shows

The Problem:
For 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006, NMDA’s recognized shows have been managed by Donald Simpson as a service to NMDA and the horse community of the southwest. Donald has taken no management fee, invested considerable time and effort before, during and after the shows, and has paid many uncovered expenses out of his own pocket Understandably, Donald is not willing to continue managing NMDA’s shows on these terms. NMDA's SOS program helped cover the loss incurred by two of NMDA's shows this year, 2007. Donald put his management fee right back into the shows, not into his pocket.

The Issue:
NMDA’s recognized shows barely break even under the very best of circumstances if the show manager is not paid. Normally, the recognized shows lose money. The reason: a typical NMDA show costs about $13,000 (without management fee) and brings in $10,000. When entries for a show are down, the expenses cannot be cut at the last minute. Most expenses are fixed and non-negotiable. (If you want details, call one of the board members.) The fee for a qualified show manager would add $2,000 to $4,000 to the cost, more than double Donald's rate to NMDA. NMDA must find a way to make up the difference - about $10,000 per year.

The Alternatives:

  1. NMDA can stop having recognized shows
  2. Other qualified persons can come forward and run NMDA’s shows on a volunteer basis (so far no one has offered to do this)
  3. NMDA can hire out of state professional show managers to run its shows, which would cost 50% - 100% more than Donald’s fee would be
  4. As in 2007, NMDA can be responsible for all show expenses and continue paying Donald a reasonable fee to manage its shows

The Solution:

  1. NMDA will dedicate most of the proceeds from its schooling shows to the support of the recognized shows which can provide up to $5,000 per year
  2. NMDA will need to raise at least $5,000 each year in recognized show sponsorships (beyond the sponsorships provided in the past).

    The Question to You:

    1. Do you want to be able to continue attending recognized shows in Albuquerque?
    2. Are you willing to be part of the solution?
If you answer YES to these two questions, you MUST become a sponsor for NMDA’s 2008 show season. And become a sponsor today so NMDA can sign contracts NOW, get facilities and judges reserved, and begin advertising.

Your sponsorship will be part of keeping our shows.
Without your help, our shows will become a fond memory, and you will have to go out of town and out of state to show.
